(printable)Running a marathon can be a physically trying task. The marathon has a long history, originating in Greece. Below are some facts about marathons.
- An official marathon is 26 and 7/32 miles
- The marathon was one of the very first Olympic events
- The official distance was standardized in 1926
- There are more than 800 organized marathon races worldwide each year
- There are several half-marathons as well
- The world record time for a full marathon is just over 2 hours
- The record time consistently drops over the years
- The marathon is still included in the summer Olympic games, usually as the last event
- Recent studies from Sweden (October 2009) show that running a marathon can weaken your heart
