MANAGEMENT: Firing Employees checklist

No one enjoys firing an employee. Following some standard protocol will help make the process easier for everyone involved.

  1. Have someone from HR present as well to answer any questions
  2. Plan ahead for the meeting - when, where, how long
  3. Be prepared for the employee to have questions
  4. Be prepared for the employee to have an emotional response
  5. Realize this is a business decision and not personal
  6. Stay in control of the meeting at all times
  7. Give clear explanations as to why they are being terminated
  8. Be professional even if the employee isn't
  9. Look them in the eye
  10. Avoid a long build up, terminate in the first 5 minutes of the meeting
  11. Give the employee time to respond
  12. Rehearse what you will say before hand
  13. Give the employee the option to resign if possible
