COMMUNICATION: Giving Feedback checklist

(printable)

This checklist is about giving feedback to employees and co-workers. Actually it is generally about giving feedback:

  1. Remember the 3 GOLDEN RULES of feed back: A) Be specific regarding the matter you address, not general (not: "this is a mess", but "if this had been done exactly this way perhaps the result would have been better". B) Do not be personal, but address the task (So do not say: "You are incompetent and mean and lazy"). C) Look at the future, not the past.
  2. Avoid surprises. Do not wait until the yearly meeting.
  3. Be clear. Be specific about expectations, particularly if an employee is new in his/her area.
  4. Listen. Ask what works. Use open questions to open and progress the dialogue.
  5. Be informal. Generation Y (and X) likes the informal, including quick messages.
  6. Reflect. Tell Generation Y what you have learned from them.
  7. Be prepared. Take notes to facilitate constructive feedback.
